Steelcase Flex Mobile Power
Freedom to move. Power to work.
I led the design exploration for the relaunch of Flex Mobile Power while at Steelcase. Flex Mobile Power is a high performance mobile battery delivering everyday utility in a sculptural form, integrating seamlessly into any environment. The redesign pays homage to the sculptural form and function of the original battery, while introducing a reserved and minimal aesthetic.
The design exploration was executed both in CAD and hand sculpted prototyping, following a similar design process to the original battery which originated from ceramic casting. Under a co-development process with Anker, improvements to internal design influenced aesthetic changes from the original product.
Visual 2.0
Flex Mobile Power introduced the concept of a high performance mobile power solution to the contract furniture market in 2017. A ceramic-like form, subtle texturing, a soft handle & brass accents refined the battery from a utilitarian purpose-built tool to a sculptural object that could live on any table without feeling extraneous against other technology and glassware.
Letting the new battery speak for itself against the former, a more reserved aesthetic was targeted while still retaining the characteristic accents, textures, and touch points. In harmony with the ceramic processes that inspired the first, the ideation and refinement of the new form evolved through hand carved models akin to wood carved objet.
